Funding rates: questions and answers
What is the funding rate?
Funding is a regular payment between longs and shorts of a perpetual contract that keeps its price close to the spot price. When funding is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs.
How does funding work on Hyperliquid?
On Hyperliquid funding is paid every hour, not every 8 hours as on most centralized exchanges. When the contract trades at the oracle price, the rate is 0.00125% per hour — about 11% APR; a premium or discount moves it up or down. To compare with Binance and Bybit, HyperScan converts every rate to per hour and APR.
What is funding rate arbitrage?
If funding on Hyperliquid and on Binance differs, you can short where it is higher and go long where it is lower, hedging the price, and collect the difference. The HL − Binance column shows it in APR. Fees, the price gap between exchanges and a change of the rate eat into the profit, and each side can be liquidated.
